Well, after what feels like hours of trying to get the drivers to work ( I kept getting a code 10, the device failed to start error), I was finally able to pair my xbox one controller and my Wii Motion Plus controller to the device. What a nightmare!
So many times I had to uninstall and reinstall the drivers. The ones on the disk are not to be used. Just go to the website and download the ones provided there for your version of windows. The range of this device is absolute rubbish. I get about 3 feet range max on this thing.
Jun 29, 2012 - IOGEAR Bluetooth 4.0 USB Micro Adapter, GBU521. And since the newer Macs all have Bluetooth 4.0 support, I'm sure that the drivers. May 21, 2014 - Adding a BLE (Bluetooth 4.0) dongle to Mac OS X (Mavericks). I was able to use this procedure to get a iogear Bluetooth 4.0 USB Micro..co.uk/how-to/mac-software/get-continuity-handoff-airdrop-on-old-mac-3582632/. IomegaWare provides all the tools you need for your Iomega drive, including driver software, utilities for copying and finding data, password protection, guest access for portability, a control strip module, and file matching. The software is also designed to be compatible with much older Macs (Quadra, Centris, Mac LC, Mac SE, Mac II, Performa, Powerbook, and Powerbook Duo).
The device is paired with my Xbox One Controller and I have the BT adapter plugged in front of the computer 1 foot from my face. I sit pretty close to the computer when i play my games and when i have my hands down in a comfortable position, there is ALOT of latency/delay from when i press a button or move in a direction on the xbox controller to the time something happens on screen.
If i move the controller closer to the adapter, it gets better but by no means am i going to play with my hands up in front of my face just so i can get good BT signal. Mainly i wanted to use this for my xbox controller and my Wii remotes to pair to my PC to play games on Dolphin Emulator. I tried it and it paired (had to force pair it through forced bluetooth passthrough in Dolphin) but I didn't play for more than a few seconds because unfortunately if you want to use this device with dolphin, you need to modify the drivers for the device which makes it not pair with anything else besides your wii remotes and ONLY in Dolphin Emulator. Also, like others have mentioned, the device fits into the USB port with ALOT of force. You are probably going to need pliers to remove it. I'm only giving 2 stars because i cannot deny that it paired with my devices in windows 10 x64. Honestly, just save the headache and buy something else.

I recently bought an iRig Blueboard MIDI controller, which requires Bluetooth 4.0. I have a late 2009 iMac, running Mavericks 10.9.1, with a built in Bluetooth 2.1 adapter.
I had 1 USB port available on the back of my iMac, and I used this port to attach IOGear dongle. Don't know if this dongle will work on a USB hub. I knew before I bought the Blueboard that it wouldn't work with my bluetooth adapter, so I took a chance on buying the IOGear adapter (GBU521), and hoped I could get it to work on my iMac. After much research I found that while the OS should support this device, the OS would always default back to the original bluetooth adapter. I couldn't get it to switch over to the new adapter, until I found a post in this Amazon review section for this device. The other reviewer, who used a laptop in his review, stated that if you booted up with the IOGear dongle removed, turned off bluetooth, plugged in the IOGear dongle, and then turned bluetooth back on, it would now switch over to the IOGear dongle.
It worked as he stated, but also as he stated, when you rebooted it went back to the built in adapter. I tried an experiment, which ultimately worked for me anyway. I booted up with the IOGear dongle removed. I plugged in a wired USB mouse, which you will need after you disable your bluetooth mouse. I then disconnected (unpaired) my bluetooth keyboard and mouse. After doing that, and now using the USB mouse, I then turned off bluetooth.
I plugged in the IOGear dongle and turned bluetooth back on. I verified that the IOGear dongle was working. I then went into system preferences for the mouse and keyboard and reconnected (paired) my bluetooth mouse and keyboard, which made them now paired to the new IOGear dongle. When I rebooted, the system now defaulted to the new IOGear Bluetooth 4.0 adapter. With my desktop, I had a bluetooth keyboard and mouse that were required items in the system. In order to make them available, I suspect the OS was forced to choose the IOGear adapter in order to make a keyboard and mouse available.
Whatever the reason, my keyboard, mouse, and Blueboard and all now happy with Bluetooth 4.0. Don't know what to say for people with laptops which have have built in keyboards and trackpads.
Also, I don't know if this procedure works with other brands of Bluetooth adapters. Seems like if the OS has support for the device, this procedure should work for them too.
Anyway, this is my 2 cents. Installed this adapter on a new Dell Latitude laptop that was upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
I followed the instructions provided on their driver download page, which said that Windows 10 doesn't need any drivers installed. The built-in drivers allowed me to pair with my Android audio devices. BUT, I could NOT establish a media connection - i.e.
I could not stream audio from those devices to the Windows computer (which I did on a daily basis with WIndows 7). Digging into the control panel, I could see that although the devices were connected, the list of bluetooth services exposed by the adapter was empty.
That explained why I could not connect for media. I also noticed that the Microsoft drivers were dated 2006.
Not sure if that is accurate, but if it is, that would be very troublesome. I contacted IOGear tech support - they repeatedly blamed my Android devices (which worked fine with previous laptop and multiple car adapters). Then they blamed Microsoft. After the frustrating chat with them, I decided to IGNORE the instructions from their site and install their Windows 8 drivers (widcomm drivers), since Windows 10 works with most Windows 8 drivers.
And they work! After a reboot, I re-paired the devices and the Windows control panel reported a list of services, including 'Advanced Audio'. I was then able to set the Android devices to connect as media devices and everything worked perfect!! I should probably take away more than 1 star for IOGear's hapless tech support.but the device does work well, so I give it 4 stars.
First impressions. The piece fits incredibly snug into the the usb port on my mid 2012 macbook pro with mac OS Sierra 10.12.2, I had to grip it with my teeth to pull it back out. Upon plugging it in, nothing happens. No pops up notifying recognition of something new; I wasn't sure if it was working. I plugged it in with bluetooth off, so I turned bluetooth back on and paired with my speakers. It worked, but I wasn't sure if it was the dongle or my internal bluetooth connection, so I pulled the dongle out (with my teeth cuz it fits so tight) and the connection was lost, plugged it back in and the connection automatically came back. No more lag or skipping.
I just wish it wasn't so hard to plug in and pull out. I only have two usb ports and the other has a dongle for a wireless keyboard, luckily that one is easy to remove. Update: I've noticed that sometimes when watching online videos there will be a delay, or an advance actually; the audio will start before the video. If I remove the dongle and restart bluetooth it goes back in sync.I've noticed that if I disconnect and reconnect the connection, but not the physical device from my computer, then it will not reconnect properly the first time, instead it will play through my computer's internal speakers, but disconnecting and re-connecting the second time fixes the glitch. Still, it's starting to get annoying to have to disconnect and reconnect so often.
At first I would have to dis/reconnect when first opening a video in either youtube or netflix but then I could continue to watch/listen in sync even after new videos loaded, but now I'm having to dis/reconnect with each new video loading. Not sure what is causing this, if it's the IOGEAR device or my computer or the bluetooth receiver on the other end.Pretty sure it is the IOGEAR device. When connecting with my internal bluetooth there is skips but audio/video are in-sync, and when connecting a different device to my receiver there is no problem at all, but going through the IOGEAR transmitter causes audio-advance/video-delay that is very frustrating, removing stars because of this. JAMS IN USB PORT!!!
I would rate it ZERO stars if there was such a choice. After exchanging the first one, I learned both parts have an identical manufacturing defect.
The Bluetooth functionality is fine. Just don't expect your USB port to be the same after removing this part, as USB port may break. I almost needed pliers to remove this adapter. I never removed the second one from the package as the defect is clear to see. Note the gap between the 'bottom' plastic part and the metal shell, indicated with the red arrows. Edit: I originally plugged this into an USB extension cable and I'm glad I did!
It took an unordinary amount of force to plug this adapter in. Upon removal, I was worried I was going to wreck the USB port on the extension cable. That would be no problem as a cable is easily replaced. Laptop and Desktop USB ports are not. I have been using USB since its inception, and I repair USB ports on customer laptops due to devices like this. Maybe I got two from the same bad lot.
If you purchase this item, inspect it before using. BUYER BEWARE. I personally would NEVER PLUG THIS DIRECTLY INTO LAPTOP OR DESKTOP. I bought this to upgrade the Bluetooth (2.0?) on my Mac Pro. The sole purpose was that there was a loss in connection between some of my bluetooth devices (mouse, keyboard, etc) that made everyday tasks impossible. However, it first seemed impossible to get this adapter to work.
I read varying degrees of success getting varying models of Macs to recognize it. Ultimately I disconnected my Bluetooth in the Mac Pro and I believe left it unplugged for a while. Important to note, I had to disconnect the antenna AND the bluetooth card itself from the logic board for the adapter to be recognized. With this adapter plugged into the USB on the back of an Apple Cinema display I booted up the Mac and on it's own it finally recognized this adapter and have not had a single issue using my devices with the Mac Pro since. However, using Windows via BootCamp, even after installing the drivers IOGEAR make for Windows, I never got these same devices to recognize. I have wired and infrared input devices so I'm not concerned but this adapter in a Mac running Windows may not work. I've read there are ways to get the Mac OS feature Handoff to work on an older Mac and this adapter (most I've read has been about MacBooks, not Mac Pros) but I haven't tried it.
It involves third party software that is, at best, only beta on newer versions of MacOS. If you are buying this for use with a Bluetooth mouse, save your money. This product drops connections randomly and occasionally (Razer Orochi). Definitely do not buy this if you are using this for gaming, not fun when you lose mouse or keyboard connectivity during a fight or online play! Kept receiving a lot of BTUSB errors, BSOD when turning on wireless headset (Bose QC3) in event viewer and the device blocking Bluetooth devices due to it being faulty under windows. I have tried using the latest Broadcom drivers to no avail.
Its frustrating having to pull the dongle, reboot, delete software, reboot, reinsert dongle, let windows 10 install or custom install just to get this to work. On another desktop using Debian 8.6 Jessie(Linux), it took a bit of customizing of blueman and bluez drivers to get it to work, once working I could use my Bose QuietComfort 3 with no issues. Haven’t tested a Bluetooth mouse yet though.
In summary, avoid if using this to game with a Bluetooth product such as mouse or keyboard. Note: Using this in a USB3.0 slot gave odd behaviors, plugging back into USB 2.0 did this work somewhat.
